Jamie Topham
Jamie compiles our monthly URBAN and GLOBAL discs for Europe's No.1 promo service, which also makes up our excellent Ultimate Street DJ Pack.
After starting out as a club DJ in the mid-80's, Jamie got his first role within the industry in 1989 as UK Club Promotions manager for legendary US hip hop / dance label Sleeping Bag Records, working releases from Todd Terry, EPMD and Kariya. In 1992 he began working for Blues & Soul magazine and a year later took over as their Club Editor.
By 1996 Jamie had taken up the role of Urban Promotions manager at Arista Records' UK office, where he worked on breakthrough acts at the time such as Usher, Outkast, Monica and Next. He also promoted more established artists such as TLC, Puff Daddy, Lisa Stansfield and Notorious B.I.G. and helped to strengthen BMG UK's renowned Word Of Mouth promotions department, working closely with the UK's club, radio, pirate & street community.
In 1999, as BMG UK's Head Of Club Promotions, Jamie looked after the team promoting new dance & urban releases for the RCA, Arista, Decostruction, Nu Life & Satellite labels. This gave him his opportunity to work closely on acts across the spectrum including Jay-Z, Angie Stone, Alicia Keys, Donell Jones, Rui Da Silva, Double 99 and Ian van Dahl.
Within a couple of years Jamie moved into a new International A&R role, working on many more US acts like Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mario and Blu Cantrell and commissioning club mixes on domestic repertoire such as Natalie Imbruglia, Dido, Faithless, Natasha Bedingfield and Kasabian. In 2005 Jamie set up his independent consultancy and continued his success by commissioning Groovefinder's UK Top 5 remix of Nina Simone's smash 'Aint Got No, I Got Life' (from the Muller Lite TV ad), worked with the legendary Jeff Wayne on the re-release of 'Eve Of The War' (remixed by Tom Middleton) and with UK R&B producers Full Phatt overseeing remixes of two black music classics: Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince's 'Summertime' and Bill Withers 'Lovely Day'.
In 2007, Jamie also A&R'ed the first ever official Bob Dylan remix with Mark Ronson and more recently has worked with projects remixed by Mike Delinquent Project, Soulshaker, Bass Monkeys and Dave Doyle for the likes of Sony Music, Island Records and various music & media companies. He also occasionally writes for the black music website BlackSheepMag.com and is one of the organisers of the annual Summer Soulstice event in north London.
